With so many people infected all over the world, Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak is something that must be taken seriously by everyone.  A virus that started in Wuhan, China early 2020, this now has spread fast and scientists are scrambling to find a vaccine for this new strain of virus.  The World Health Organization also recently made a statement that Coronavirus outbreak is now considered a Pandemic.

Some say that it is not as bad compared to other viruses, but let’s be honest  here –  the economy is affected, businesses, tourism and so much more are now feeling the effect. People are panicking and hoarding supplies. Many people are losing their jobs.

Since more new cases are being found here in the Philippines, it is important that we safeguard ourselves from the Coronavirus. Anybody could get it and some won’t show symptoms right away making it difficult to figure out who has it and who hasn’t.

Common Symptoms of Coronavirus

Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. If you are feeling any of these, better get medical attention right away. Source: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/symptoms.html

Fever

Cough

Shortness of breath

Now, here are some of the simple ways to at least protect yourself from the outbreak.

1. Wash your hands often with soap

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap if you have been in public places, sneezed, or coughed. In case you cannot wash your hands, it is advisable to bring a alcohol spray or a hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol. Make this a habit!

2. Cover your nose when you sneeze and mouth when you cough

Always make it a practice to cover your mouth or nose with a tissue and immediately throw the tissue in the bin. If no tissue available, you can use the inside of your elbow. And, do not forget to spray alcohol or wash your hands after sneezing or coughing.

3. Clean and Disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Most specially in the house, you may spray alcohol or any disinfectant liquid like bleach. Spray on door knobs, tables, chairs, computers, mobile phones, floors, and much more. Do this on a regular bases. Aside from the house, it also advisable to do the same thing at your office.

4. Wear a Face Mask

Specially if you are feeling sick, it is advisable to wear a surgical mask or any mask to avoid spreading the virus. They say it is only advisable if you are sick, but for preventative measures and the dust, might as well wear one when you go outside or to crowded places.

5. Stay home if unwell and avoid close contact

I have friends I know that decided to do a self-quarantine. Not because they have the Coronavirus but they just don’t want others to catch the flu or cough. It is advisable to at least distance yourself from other people like going to crowded places like gatherings, concerts or events. At this moment, it is your safety that is important.

Remember that we have no idea who has the Coronavirus since testing kits are still very limited. I just hope that the testing kits made by University of the Philippines (UP) scientists will be available for distribution all of the the Philippines and the world. More importantly, let us hope and pray that a vaccine or cure would be made available for all. Stay safe and God Bless us all!
